SHORT BIO

 

Noriko Ueda  bassist/composer/arranger

Originally from Hyogo, Japan, Noriko Ueda began studying piano at age four and electric bass at sixteen, later switching to upright bass to pursue her interest in jazz. She attended Berklee College of Music in Boston, where she studied jazz composition. After graduation, she moved to New York City to build her career as a performer and composer.

Ueda currently tours internationally with Artemis, a jazz ensemble named “Jazz Group of the Year” by DownBeat magazine for three consecutive years. Their third album, Arboresque (Blue Note Records, 2025), topped the JazzWeek national radio chart for five consecutive weeks and was featured on NPR’s Tiny Desk Concerts

Ueda has also performed with the Ted Rosenthal Trio for over 20 years, completing more than ten tours in Japan. Their album Out of This World reached number one on national jazz radio charts. Ueda’s leader album, Debut, was released by Terashima Records in 2015.

She has performed at venues such as Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, Jazz at Lincoln CenterBirdland, and Village Vanguard.

She has performed with artists like legendary, Frank Wess, Kenny Barron, Grady Tate, and Bill Charlap.

Ueda is a longtime member of the DIVA Jazz Orchestra and an active member of the Birdland Big Band.

She received the Charlie Parker Award from Broadcast Music, Inc. (BMI) for her big band composition.

Since 2022, she has taught at SUNY Purchase College, sharing her experience with emerging jazz musicians.
